I’m guessing I joined the club in the early 1990’s.  My first David Sutton Memorial Cross State Tour was in 1994 when we rode to Edisto Beach.  I’m sure I would have had to be a member to participate in that event.  It was an eye opener and an introduction to a whole new group of people I didn’t know, but loved to ride bikes.

What brought you to Greenville?

I moved to Greenville in the later/mid 1980’s.  I moved here to go back to school-aiming for a career change.

How long have you been cycling?

I bought a used 1970’s something Peugeot touring bike with bar-end shifters after I got out of school (the 1st time).  That would have been in 1982, maybe 83.  So, I have been riding regularly for 40+ years.

How do you benefit from your Greenville Spinners membership?

I guess my strongest connection and benefit with the club stems from the Cross State Tour.  I helped Rae Harrison for 10+ years when she organized the tour. Sally Nicholson and I, along with many others, were part of the team that helped revive it this year.  So, the friendships you develop, the connections with the shops, time shared with other lovers of cycling, really does create a great community, and has broadened my horizon.  We have a LOT of very interesting members in the club…who have taken part in some amazing adventures.

How would you describe the cycling community in Greenville?

I’d say the cycling community is so much more culturally diverse and expansive now. It is strong and HUGE compared to 35 years ago.  We all used to recognize and holler out to each other every Saturday when riding the watershed.  I even remember when the watershed had smooth pavement.  Now I rarely know people I pass when out for a ride.  I think it is great we have grown so much.  I do wish we could gather more often, in hopes of meeting all these new folks who share in this passion.  I’ve developed so many lifelong friends through cycling.
