Greenville Spinners' Yahoo! Group
The Greenville Spinners use Yahoo! Groups to communicate. Everything from club activities and spontaneous rides to issues about advocacy and more are posted there. New participation in the Spinners' Yahoos! Group is limited to active Spinners members only.
The Yahoo! Group operates as both electronic mailing lists and Internet forums. Group messages can be posted and read by e-mail or on the Group homepage, like a web forum. Members can choose whether to receive individual e-mails or daily digest e-mails (a single email a day summarizing the individual e-mails), or to read the posts at the Greenville Spinners' Yahoo! Group web site. This Yahoo! Group web site is an altogether different web site that the one you are reading from now.
When you join the Greenville Spinners club, you will automatically be added to the Yahoo! Group if you give an email address. You will receive an invitation in your email inbox generally within a week or two of completing the online Member Signup process. You can complete the process and then pay by either of two convenient ways.
1. Pay by credit card with no surcharge.
2. Print off invoice and pay by check (when deciding payment types choose "Print Invoice and send check").
What follows are detailed instructions on how to set up, manage and get the best of a Yahoo! groups account.
Yahoo Group Posting Policy
The Greenville Spinners Yahoo group is to be used only for posting of cycling-related news, announcements, and other communications of general interest to the larger cycling community.
Please do not engage in debate
Local Bike Shops with an ACTIVE membership may post any sales or events going on within their shops.
How to manage a Yahoo! account
What are Yahoo! groups?
Yahoo! Groups are a free email group service provided by Yahoo! that allows you to easily create and join email groups. Email groups offer a convenient way to connect with others who share the same interests and ideas. How do Yahoo! Groups work?
You can send messages to the whole group using just one email address, which has the following format: Greenville-Spinners@yahoogroups.com . When someone replies to the email, everyone gets the reply too. Please remember to identify yourself by including your name at the end of any email you send to the entire group – it’s not always obvious from your email address.
Queries/Problems
If you have any queries or problems please send an email to Greenville-Spinners-owner@yahoogroups.com and NOT to the group Yahoo! group address.
Emails to individuals
The Greenville Spinners Yahoo! group is set up for replies to go to all group members. If you wish to send comments to an individual on the group please send it to their personal email address and NOT the group address (Do not press ‘reply’ to the Greenville-Spinners@yahoogroups.com mail, but copy and paste their email address into your “To” address field on your email). This will save everyone’s inbox being filled with clutter!
How to subscribe
Begin by becoming a Spinners member. Do so by completing the online Member Signup. You can complete the process and then pay by either of two convenient ways.
1. Pay by credit card with no surcharge.
2. Print off invoice and pay by check (when deciding payment types choose "Print Invoice and send check").
If you include your email address, you will receive an invitation in your email box asking you to join the Greenville Spinners Yahoo Group. You should receive this invitation within about two weeks of completing the Member Signup application.
To change your delivery options, your email address, or to unsubscribe
Changing subscription/delivery options and unsubscribing
There are two ways to change your delivery options. One is to use emails the other is to use the Yahoo! Groups web site. Both are covered below.
Changing delivery options using email
You can manage your account by email. To do this send an email with a BLANK subject line to the following addresses. You will receive a confirmation email with instructions before your changes take affect. The following table lists all email commands:
Changing delivery options using the Yahoo! Groups web site
Go to http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Greenville-Spinners and sign in. In the page that returns select the small link “Edit Membership” near the top of the page. On the page that returns you can modify you options.
Below is a description of the options for delivery.
- "Individual emails", where you receive a copy of every email message sent to the group;
- "Daily digest", where you receive a single daily email, with all the emails sent over the previous 24 hours:
- "Special notices", where you only receive messages sent by a group moderator as a special notice (i.e. few if any messages at all); or
- "No email", where you receive no messages from the group. You can still visit the group web site and read the messages there - at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Greenville-Spinners/messages after you sign in.
Adding, removing, or editing an email address
Go to http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Greenville-Spinners and sign in. In the page that returns, at the very top margin of the page is a greeting “Hi, …(your name)”. Select the down arrow next to this and choose “Profile”. Follow the instructions.
What to do when away on vacation, holiday or business
Many members suffer from over-flowing email inboxes when they return from a period away from the office.
First, PLEASE DO NOT SIMPLY SET UP AN OUT OF OFFICE REPLY (OOR). If you do, all the group members will get your out of office replies for each Spinners posting/email! If you need to use an OOR, see below.
Solution that do not use an "out of office reply"
Set your subscription to "no email" until you get back. You activate this by sending a blank email to Greenville-Spinners-nomail@yahoogroups.com . When you get back, send a blank email to either of these address to re-active your delivery depending on what frequency you want:
To change your subscription to daily digest mode (where you receive a single daily email, with all the emails sent over the previous 24 hours), send a blank message to:
Greenville-Spinners-digest@yahoogroups.com
To change your subscription to individual emails from the group, send a blank message to:
Greenville-Spinners-normal@yahoogroups.com
When you return, you can still read all the messages at the messages page found at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Greenville-Spinners/messages .
If you need to use an out of office reply...
Using an OOR can be very useful when you are going to be unavailable for a time. But, if you are not careful, you can send OORs in response to every email you receive from a mailing list. Doing this on the Greenville Spinner group - will get you banned, in order to protect other group members from getting lots of OOR messages from you. But it is not difficult to set up your OOR system to avoid this. Below are instructions for setting up such rules in Outlook
